Rhodes extended its win streak to 8 games this afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from Blackburn by scores of 8-0 and 10-2, improving their overall record to 11-3. In game 1, sophomore Sara Bowen tossed her second consecutive no-hitter in the circle, and the 4th of her career, to pick up her 4th win of the season. Sophomore Cindy Bitters improved her record to 4-2 in game 2, striking out 6 and giving up just 1 earned run on 3 hits. Freshman Kelli Zomer was 3 for 6 on the day, hitting her second home run in as many days.
With the score 0-0 in the bottom of the 3rd, Zomer lined a single to left to lead off the inning. Freshman Caroline Cooper and sophomore Allison Conn then eached picked up a bunt single to load the bases for junior Rebekah Moore. Moore responded by clearing the bases with a double off the left field wall, and later scored on an RBI single from Bowen, giving the Lynx a 4-0 lead after 3 innings.
Rhodes would add 4 more in the 4th, thanks to Zomer's home run, a single by Cooper, a double by Conn, and singles from Bowen and freshman Elise Suna, making the score 8-0 heading into the 5th.
Bowen had no trouble closing the 5-inning win for the Lynx, striking out the side in the 5th. For Bowen, it was her second consecutive no-hitter, and combined with her relief appearances on Sunday and Tuesday, she has thrown 12 1/3 consecutive innings without giving up a hit. During her hitless streak, she's fanned 22 hitters, and allowed just 2 walks and 2 hit batters.
The Rhodes bats came alive early in game 1, as the Lynx pounded out 4 hits and took advantage of 3 walks to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. Two walks and a Rhodes error allowed the Beavers to cut the Lynx lead to 5-2 at the end of 3, but in the 4th the Lynx strung together 4 consecutive 2 out hits to plate 3 more runs and take an 8-2 lead.
Rhodes would add another run in the 5th when Zomer walked and later scored on a single from Conn, then put the game away in the bottom of the 6th when junior Armanda Venezia walked with 2 outs and later scored on a pinch-hit RBI double from freshman Chelsea Peters, who picked up the first hit of her college career, sealing the Lynx 10-2 win in 6 innings.
Bitters improved to 4-2 on the season, giving up just 3 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 6. With the 8 game win streak, Rhodes is now 11-3, and will play in Jackson, MS this weekend at the Millsaps Invitational. Rhodes returns home March 21-22 to open the SCAC season with a 4-game series against Centre.
